{a new day, a new look!}

Happy Thursday everyone! I hope your week is winding down and you're looking forward to the weekend!! I am uber excited as the IDSwest show is in town and I am looking forward to so many wonderful events including an Opening Night Gala tonight and a fabulous cocktail party on the weekend that we {Karla of Kerrisdale Design Inc., Victoria of Edin's House, Barbara of hodge:podge and myself} designed specifically for design bloggers attending the show. Best part? Ikea Canada is our premiere event sponsor and working with them has been fabulous! I hope to have tons of fab party pics to share with you next week.

On another note, things may look a little different to you around here today :) I hope you like it! I've been working on a little blog face-lift for some time, and I have to thank the people involved: the wonderful Kelly of Fabulous K Creative designed my navigation bar and side bar elements {she's fantastic, contact her if your thinking of a blog redesign!}, and my awesome/patient/skilled husband put together my header art!

Another exciting addition: I've finally put up a little Etsy shop {just a few items, more to come soon - baby steps!}. Here are some of the pieces you will find there:

And I am working on having the large canvas in my kitchen professionally scanned so it should be up there soon too!

Thank you so so much for all of your support of this blog, you have no clue how much it means to me! And thank you to everyone who personally encouraged me to put my artwork out there even though it is a bit intimidating at the best of times :) Have a wonderful Thursday!

Art Around Us

In the process of developing one’s creativity, it is important to not only look at the world around us, but to ‘see’ things that excite us.

Here are a few images; one a form of utility (the bike stand) and the other, simply art.

Both are creatively executed. These were taken at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles. The workers are removing the graffiti to make room for the next installation.

I'm a firm believer that art can make a room. I also generally go by the 'bigger is better' rule! Here are a few examples I had saved where I think the art is truly one of the strongest elements in the space:

I know I have posted this image a 100 times, but seriously, how amazing is this oversized piece? To actually own a Massimo Vitali print would be a dream!

Have I made a convincing case? I really think the art in these spaces hold there own against any other elements in the room. Love!!

I just love the look of framed art hung directly onto a bookcase! It really adds another layer of interest, don't you think? The combination of piles of glorious books and artwork is just dreamy, and I would love to try this look in my own home office. Into the inspiration files it goes!

Lovely! Has anyone tried this layered look on their own bookcases or in a project? If so I'd love to hear your tips on how to secure the frames without ruining the actual bookshelf. I was thinking maybe the 3M adhesion strips may work nicely!

Have you noticed....the map trend!

Once you start noticing them, you see them everywhere. I am always curious what is the impetus for a new trend, though having noticed it, it is probably not new! Maybe it is the need to travel but not being able to afford it in this current financial climate....or is that just me!!!

Anyway....on to the maps and world globes...you know I kinda of like it and the more I see of it the more I like it maybe it is the nostalgia .... the old school days.....

Who'd have thunked it....two people came up with the same idea of creating lights out of globes cut in half!

Cover some old boxes for a colourful quirky look on your book shelves.

I want this chair, it would look great in the family room or kids room or study....

This is cute, I am not sure if I would do it but.....

We can sit at the table and decide where we want to go next....Tahiti looks nice!

OK.... now I have always have had a lot of patience but this is one or two steps to far.... amazing!

Pushing Myself... Watercolor Workshop with Jane Lafazio

OK.. time to push. I have never taken a true drawing class. But, here I am in Utah, learning how to sketch and create water color journal art. Talk about stretchiiinnnngggg.

So, meet Jane Lafazio (www.plainjanestudio.com). Jane is our amazing instructor, who is guiding our way. Dianne Streifer is our host, Creative Mountain Retreats.

So... bit by bit, I'm finding my way. Thus far, I've done three pieces, and am losing the fear. Here is the class.

Our first sketch/water color, was to take a faux bird and sketch it. Then, ink it in, and then, paint it. Here are a few images.

Today, we went to 'town' and found objects at a boutique to sketch. Things like... a bird's nest.

Crossing off the to do list - bedroom art

Well, it's nice to be able to get another job done! When I stenciled the wall in my bedroom it really showed that the lovely red toned tiles I had on the wall above my desk was just not working with the turquoise and warm beige walls!

Yep...it is just not working but never mind, I have just the spot for them in another room! Now, what to replace them with??? I am in "no spending mode" at the moment so time to search my craft supplies. And I struck lucky!!! I found these little carved stone plaques I bought ages ago and never did anything with plus 3 blank canvas!
