Style Points: Bohemian Braided Down-Do

Don't you think that a low bun should be called a "down-do"? I think that makes sense so in Kendra world that's what it shall be :)

I just started school this week and it's been crazy. I haven't had time to do my hair as fancy as I like it but I am experimenting with simple yet cute styles. For me the easiest thing is a bun but they can get boring.

So here is a braided style with a bohemian flair! What did I do?

I began this style with stretched hair from a flexi-rod set. I put in 2 French braids in the front. Then I did 2 small braids. Next, I pulled my hair back into a low bun and pinned in fly-aways. Then I pinned back the braids. Following that I pulled out two small pieces of hair at my temples and wrapped them around my finger for curls. To top off this style I added one of my favorite headbands!

How did it turn out??

Hair Update : First Time Braid - Outs

Here's another quick Hair Update...

After doing all the washing last wash day, I decided to try something I've never really tried before :

Braid - outs

Yes, I have never worn a braid out.

I don't know but...I have always preferred twists/ twist - outs ... mainly because of the ease I guess...

So I put in 16 braids put on my satin bonnet scarf and went to bed.

On the next day, I took them down and .... loved it!!

Though I didn't get much definition, I liked the fullness that came with the braid outs and how my hair laid. In fact, I cannot easily wear my hair in this way with twist outs so it was sort of a first time wearing my hair like this...

I like the look a lot and I think I've become a fan of braid - outs but here's what I've learnt about braid - outs :

PROS 

● gives a fuller look

● hair lies where you want it to

● stretches hair out more than twists

CONS

● takes about three times longer to do than twists

● takes about four times longer to take out than twists (I was in a hurry that morning so you can imagine...)

● it's harder to achieve good definition

But this was my experience with them and remember, it's my very first time so after playing with it a few more times...I'm sure I'll only master it...though I doubt I'll be getting used to the time it takes to put on and take out any time soon...

I wore this hair do all day and loved every minute of it...I did get some looks but what's new? 

By the end of the day, by around 9 pm shrinkage had kicked in and it wasn't looking quite the same anymore ... but either way, that's the nature of my hair so I'm not even considering that!

Style Points: Box Braids

Hello there ladies! I haven't done box braids in a while. But I decided on this style when I washed my hair. I plan on taking them out in a few days for a braid out, depending on how I feel. I definitely like the convenience of them.

Why box braids?

• Great protective style
• Easy maintenance
• Stretches hair (better than twists in my opinion)
• Clean and neat style 
• You can wash/co-wash your hair with them in 
• Transitioning-friendly hair style

How did I do it?

• Start with freshly washed and de-tangled hair
• Use some type of moisturizing and styling product for moisture and hold. 
• I used shea moisture curl enhancing smoothie and bioinfusion olive oil leave in conditioner
• Braid to the size of your choice
• When I get to the ends of the braids, I curl them around my finger for a nice finish on my braid out
• It took me 1 hour and 15 minutes for a medium size 

How do I maintain this look?

• In the evening, moisturize with about a nickel size of oil (I use jojoba) 
• Tie it up and go to bed!

How long can I leave them in?

A week to a month there is great flexibility with this style. In the past I have done these smaller and left them in for a month. The great thing about them is that you can wash them with limited frizzing. 

Transitioning-friendly? What do you mean?

Transitioning in 2009

This was one of my favorite transitioning styles. As you can see in the pictures below, my ends are still relaxed. I didn't always braid them all the way down either which is another option. However, this style kept my hair up and out of the way. It was versatile with styling options, easy to wash and ended in a cute braid out when I finally took them out!

Do I do them on wet or dry hair?

I did mine on wet hair this time but you can do it on wet or dry hair! It is up to you :)
