Poll Results: Do you think you spend too much time on your hair?

Thank you to all of the 36 participants in this poll,

Do you think you spend too much time on your hair? Here are the results:

  • I spend way too much time on my hair- 2 women (5%)
  • It depends on what I am doing- 17 women (47%)
  • I spend a lot of time on my hair- 6 women (16%)
  • I don't spend enough time on my hair- 8 women (22%)
  • Is there such thing as spending too much time on your hair? 3 women (8%)

What was my vote?

"It depends on what I am doing". After washing my hair, it could take a good amount of time to detangle and style my hair into a protective style. But I try not to spend too much time on my hair!

What is spending "too much time" on your hair mean?

I believe that you hair can become an idol. Hair care can be a consuming thing that takes up a lot of your time. We could easily get too fixated on hair forums, websites, blogs, etc, to where it becomes a major priority. In all things we have to have balance. From a spiritual aspect, the bible tells us to let our moderation be known unto all men. Moderation is the key!

What are your thoughts on this subject?

Poll Results: How Often Do You Deep Condition Your Hair?

Hello ladies!

How often do you deep condition your hair??

My answer? Once every two weeks when I wash my hair.

Your answer? Depends on how dry, brittle and in need of attention your hair is.

  • Deep conditioning is a must!

    • It is imparitive that you deep condition your hair. Our hair is dry and needs extra moisture. Deep conditioners penetrate in a way that regular conditioners not. They have different properties.

  • How often you deep condition is up to you!

    • Do you use heat often? You should deep condition once a week

    • Is your hair brittle and dry? You should deep condition once a week

    • Is your hair at a good moisture level? You can use your discretion. Bi-monthly or monthly.

  • Can you deep condition too often?

    • YES! You can weaken the strands if you deep condition too often.

  • Need help looking for a deep conditioner?

    • Look for something with organic ingredients. Read the labels! You want to beware of these ingredients. Print the list and take it with you.

    • Look for something with things that you know work in your hair- whether it be a type of oil or it contains protein, etc.

    • Take off the top and feel the consistency. Do you prefer lightweight products or thicker masques?

  • What deep conditioner do I currently use?

    • Bioinfusion olive oil deep conditioning treatment

  • How can you get it to penetrate your hair deeply?

    • HEAT!

      • Sit under the hair dryer for an hour while the deep conditioner is in.

      • Cover your hair with a hot towel and shower cap to seal in heat

      • Use your natural body heat by simply covering your hair with a plastic shower cap

Poll Results: Opinions of Others

Hello ladies, here are the results to yet another poll. This time 34 people voted and participated. The question was,

Does it matter to you what other people think or say about your hair?
  • 6 people (17% of the voters) said, “Yes, it hurts my feelings”
  • 8 people (23% of the voters) said, “Yes, to the point that it makes me ashamed at times”
  • 4 people (11% of the voters) said, “No, its like water off my back”
  • 19 people (55% of the voters) said, “No, I am who I am and I love me!”
  • 5 people (14% of the voters) said, “I am very indifferent”
It made me happy that over half of the women who voted said, “No I am who I am and I love me!” That is very encouraging and inspiring to hear! For those of you who are struggling with what people think about you, let me offer some encouragement…

Lately every little thing someone says about my hair has been bothering me. Now normally you hear your average comment, but nothing offensive. However, I have been hearing things that were just ignorant and offensive. Let me give you some examples:

  • Someone said, in response to my god-sisters natural (and beautiful) curly fro- “She should fix it.” Another person responded and said, “why is it broken? You don’t fix hair.”
    • I am so glad this person responded this way. I was flabbergasted that someone would say that her hair wasn’t fixed. If someone with straight hair can wear their hair down, why can’t we?
  • I read an article where Oprah’s hair stylist said that he believed African-American natural hair was the only hair that needed to be chemically altered.
    • Word? YES! And to top it off , the man is black or mixed. I was like wow, wow, and wow
  • Recently someone flat out did not believe me that black hair could be to your waist. I was so irritated.
    • There are PLENTY of black women who have very long hair. Just go on youtube and start browsing. Its harder to find pictures.
  • Someone just said this to me, “Well having natural hair is really limited isn't it? I mean basically all you can do is wear it out or up. You can’t like wear it slick?” I laughed and said, “There is a lot we can do…” And I named styles. I told her, “Are you meaning to ask, are my styles limited when my hair is in its natural state because I don’t straighten it?” She said, “Yes.”
    • Seriously? That person must not pay attention to my hair. And my response to me not being able to slick it back was, yes I can but when I do, by the end of it all, it frizzes. Hey y’all my hair is frizzy! And it doesn’t bother me because that’s how God made it.
  • One time, several months ago, some ladies in my church were making reference to one of the sisters hair. They were telling her how much it had grown. She had straightened it that day and it was very close to being waist length. I happened to have my hair in a curly style- so it looked shorter (due to shrinkage). Well this sister they were complementing looked and me and said, “yes my hair has grown a lot. When I first got in the church it was as long as Kendra’s is now.”
    • Her hair was to her chin in the front and basially buzzed in the back when she came to the church. I can’t lie, that hurt my feelings

But you know what?? We are going to show the world that black natural hair can be beautiful, healthy and long. Black hair CAN grow. Want proof? Look at this…

ALL NATURAL hair.
No weaves, no tracks.
All girls who wear natural hair and straightened it to see the length...

So be inspired! Your hair is beautiful. Sure it might be short now but I promise if you take care of it, it will grow. No need to be ashamed because you are who you are and you should LOVE yourself :)

Poll Results: How Often Do You Wash Your Hair?

Thank you to all who participated in this poll! I do appreciate feed back. Polls are a quick way to do this. This time around, there were 41 in total who voted. Here were the results to the question, How Often Do You Wash Your Hair?
  • 31% (13 voters) answered, twice or more a week
  • 48% (20 voters) answered, once a week
  • 14% (6 voters) answered, once every two weeks
  • 4% (2 voters) answered, once every month
  • 7% (3 voters) answered, other
Okay so how do we answer the question, how often do I wash my hair?

There is no universal answer to this question. The answer will depend on your hair type in addition to how oily, normal or dry your scalp tends to be.

Lets briefly discuss the different *hair types,

Type 2 Hair

If you have type 2 hair, it is recommended that you wash your hair every day to every other day. Your hair will have a tendency to become oilier than the other types because the curls are relaxed.

Type 3 Hair

If you have type 3 hair, it is recommended that you wash your hair twice a week. Your hair can handle being washed more often and it will keep your curls in the best shape. This hair type looks best with less oil, so more frequent washing is suggested.

Type 4 Hair

If you have type 4 hair, it is recommended that you wash your hair no more than once a week. Less is more because if you wash too often, your hair will become extremely dry!

Some of your questions answered:

What hair type do you have, Kendra?
I am a type 4 without a doubt. My hair is very kinky and my curls are in a z-pattern. In fact once dry, my hair shrinks 6-7 inches back up! I have the "most difficult to handle, ultra impossible" hair type- whatever, that's bologna! lol. My hair is beautiful :)

My hair feels very dirty, what can I do in between washes?

You can try water washing which is washing your hair with water only. Massage your scalp and gently rub through your strands with water. Another option is using a dry shampoo.

My hair feels dry, what can I do in between washes?

You can co-wash. This is washing your hair with conditioner. It will help you to restore moisture before you next wash.

How often do YOU wash YOUR hair and why?

*please note: I not using the hair tying system to "rate" your hair texture- simply to break it down so that you can clearly see that there are many differences that will alter how we care for our hair :)

Poll Results: Do You Have a Summer Regimen?

Here are the results from most recent poll. I asked,

Do you have a summer regimen?
  • 42% responded: No, but I am working on it
  • 42% responded: Yes, and I love it
  • 14% responded: More help please
  • 28% responded: Summer regimen?

Lets recap on what a hair regimen is:
  • It is necessary to have several components, being:
    • Shampoo (whether liquid, bar or dry) and conditioner
    • Deep Conditioner
    • Leave in conditioner
    • Essential oil
  • To properly moisturize and seal in moisture you must:
    • Wet hair
    • Apply leave in conditioner
    • Seal with oil
  • Your hair regimen will change based on the time of the year, according to the type of climate change you experience where you live.
  • Finding what works for you is the most crucial component
