gone to the birds

sometimes my little, uneventful life seems so busy.

I didn't find the time to do my second Marrakesh post yesterday, but I was determined to do it today! however it is now very late indeed so there won't be much writing to accompany the photos as my brain seems to think it needs to be sleeping...

don't worry, there are a zillion more photos and better descriptions to come. this is mostly an outfit post, with lots of storks...

going to Badi Palace! // the entrance // giant stork nest

our second day of Marrakesh adventures brought us to the amazing Badi Palace. while it is a palace, it's nothing like Bahia, which you saw in this post; Badi is the remnants of what was once called "the incomparable palace." now it's basically ruins inhabited by the city's stork population. it is really cool.

in the courtyard // stork gatekeeper // courtyard again, better view // the pool // ditto // etc., etc... // a fearless duck- this is not zoomed in at all.

there are underground tunnels you can explore, and steps to the top of the wall where you're at eye-level with the storks. their nests are huge, and there are SO MANY. there are ducks too, and we also made a kitty friend. she (I say she, but I don't know- it seemed to have an indeterminable feminine quality...) was so friendly and cute and followed us around for a long time. we were carrying our water in a plastic bag, so that's probably what she was after (cats love bags), but we still thought it was cute.

kitty comes to visit // a new friend :) // relaxing by the pool... // stork lane // me + the birds // Marrakesh, from slightly above! // rare photo together

the view was really great too. probably the only place in the medina where you can kind of see a cityscape. (fyi- "medina" is just what they call the old part of town). it looks the way I'd always pictured it; earthy red, rooftop terraces, the occasional palm tree... plus a few satellite dishes!

don't you just love this bag?! I didn't do much shopping on the trip, but a Moroccan leather bag was a must-have. I saw this one the first time we were in the souks and just had to have it! luckily we managed to find the shop again- no small feat when it's impossible not to get lost every ten steps. anyway, it has coins from different countries on it, and the centre stone contains rose petals. awesome, right??

right!

ok time for me to go to bed.
goodnight!

a whole new world

after Barcelona Brando and I took the party to Marrakesh, Morocco. it's somewhere I've always wanted to go; exotic and beautiful and totally different from anywhere else I've ever been. kind of like being in Aladdin... a lot like that, actually. that's what makes it so awesome. I kept picturing that scene where Jasmine sneaks out of the palace and goes to the marketplace, and the vendors are like "sugar dates! sugar dates and fiiigs! sugar dates and PISTACHIOS!!!"

near the square // getting lost in the souks // me + a chameleon! // kitty. they're everywhere in the old city // orange tree // Brando in the window

we spent the first day exploring the markets and souks around jemaa el fna ("the big square"), which was a culture shock in itself. I've been to Africa before, but it was nothing like this. everyone's a salesman, haha. and a tricky one. the souks are overwhelming- if you even slow down to look at a shop someone bombards you with greetings and invitations to "come look, good price, just to look." they're also really crowded and full of beautiful and interesting things. everything is so colourful, from the glass lanterns and the jewellery, to the pyramid mounds of spices.

one guy who was particularly nice to us had two pet chameleons hanging out in his shop! he let us hold them. I bought some solid perfume from him- amber and rose. that's another thing; the souks are full of intense aromas.

Brando + both chameleons! // the rest are from Bahia Palace

we also made our way to Palace Bahia, which is still used as a royal residence sometimes. it's beautifully and ornately decorated in Moroccan tiles and carvings. everything was so pretty and detailed!

all inside Bahia Palace

it was hot enough to melt yer face off. the rest of the trip we realized the common- and most logical- thing to do was go back and chill at the riad (hostel) during the hottest part of the day. which was a nice vacation in itself; we met lots of lovely fellow travellers and everyone hung out together in the afternoons. we also met the four awesome turtles that lived at the riad and roamed about freely on the roof terrace! the is the little guy...

me + the "wee one" // snacking on something...so cute! // from the palace // on the street near our riad // I am so in love with this dress from monsoon!

after the sun goes down it's the perfect temperature for exploring. and conveniently, the night market is just as exciting as the day!

many more photos from Marrakesh to come later! such a fascinating place.

sometimes I wonder if the world's so small

I thought I'd share a few more photos from Barcelona... that aren't of my outfits!

I'd never been to Spain before, but I always knew if I ever went it would be to Barcelona. the beautiful architecture and the fact that it's right on the beach seemed like the perfect getaway to me; I love sightseeing and european shops, and I'd never had a real relaxing, beach vacation.

when Brandon and I started talking about what to do for his three-week break between semesters, the first thing we thought was to hit up ryanair.com and grab a cheap flight. it was never intended to be our honeymoon, but it seemed a more empathetic reason to ask for time off work when we called it that!

we scoped out flights to Barcelona and Marrakesh, and I was making a pros & cons list of the two places to try and decide where to go... when we realized it was actually cheaper, flight wise, to go to both! this obviously thrilled the pants off me, so we started planning our pseudo-honeymoon on a budget.

ryanair's not exactly a luxury airline, so we arrived in Reus airport, about two hours outside the city, a little after 10pm. of course with our luck the bus going to Barcelona left early and we missed it, so we had to wait for two hours to get the next one... but it was absolutely beautiful outside, so we actually didn't mind. the first thing that hits you is how ridiculously warm it is.

the second things that hits you is the language barrier, at least for a couple strict anglophones like ourselves. our cab driver didn't know a word of english! he was super nice though. and I at least knew "gracias," which we used to such an extent in Spain that in Marrakech we automatically kept using it...

la Palau de Musica Catalana // drinking fountain in the Cathedral cloisters // Casa Amatller // ticket booth at la Palau de Musica

the architecture is definitely all it's cracked up to be (is there a pun in there? maybe?). it's an almost exquisite city, with mosaics and vibrant colours and modernist buildings on cobblestone streets. Barcelona is known as Antoni Gaudi's city, and I have to say after seeing it I am a huge fan. if the guy was around these days I'd sell some valuable organs on the black market to have him build me a house.

Casa Mila // Casa Batllo

the Casa Batllo is one of the coolest things I've ever seen. it's based on the story of St. George and the dragon; the roof is the dragon's back, the rainbow walls beneath are his treasure hoard, and the balconies are shaped as the skulls of his victims. ooooh, eerie and magical.

(you can pay to go into most of the buildings on the "ruta del modernisme," but it's wiggidy-wack expensive.)

the Gaudi's Sagrada Familia is arguably his most famous work, but that deserves a post all on its own...

the modernist architecture is amazing, but it was almost unbearably hot to be walking around town to look at it! so the city beach was the star in the sweltering afternoons. they're very easy to get to and full of local flair- sun bathers coming after work, people selling mojitos and massages.

beachscape // picnic! // had to get a pic with a palm tree

after the beach we'd usually spend the evening walking up La Rambla and taking in all the street performers and market shops. it's a really fun atmosphere, but unless you're going to actually buy some trinkets, souvenirs, or produce (the fruit market it famous apparently), you don't really have to spend much time there. we just liked strolling around. I did get some cute earrings, though!

Brando and a human statue // me at the end of La Rambla

another great way to spend the nights when you don't have the cash to doll out for clubbing (which neither of us are into anyway...) is walking along the waterfront. Barcelona has lots of pretty marinas and boardwalks that literally light up at night. and it smells amazing- there are aways carts selling waffles and chocolate crepes! there's also an imax, a shopping centre, and an aquarium on the waterfront that are open late. we only partook of the latter, and it's something nice and low-key to do after dinner. plus it's the second-largest aquarium in Europe and has an underwater tunnel. FUN.

a marina // late-night mcdonald's picnic on the bridge! // sting rays always look like they're smiling // glow-in-the-dark jellies // penguin ♥ !

we also popped in to the Picasso museum, which is worth checking out, but you're not allowed to take pictures. sadface

we were only there for three full days, but I'd say Barcelona is a fantastic place to visit. the hostels are more expensive than most places, but you get pretty good bang for your buck. we stayed in a hostel called Residencia Erasmus-Gracia and it was more like a hotel. private ensuite bathroom, tv, balcony, very clean, and close to the metro station. we walked a lot around the city, but some things are farther from the center than others so we got a two-day metro travel card for cheap. it was too hot to walk most of the time anyways, and the trains are air conditioned!

it's also cheaper to fly into Reus or Girona a ways outside of the city, where airlines like ryanair and easyjet go frequently. keep in mind though that you have to get a bus or a train into Barcelona, so if you prefer convenience over bargains you might as well just spend the extra bit and fly right into the city airport. Brandon and I got the buses to and from the airports, and they only cost about $16.

overall Barcelona can be pretty pricey, but since we don't go clubbing when we travel and I didn't do any shopping, it can definitely work on a budget. I would certainly go again, but there are so many other places I've yet to explore...

arc de triomf- one in every city!

this is sounding a lot like a travel ad now that I'm reading back... whatever. if anyone ever has any questions, I'm no expert, but I'll give what little advice I can!

take me to your beach

I'm back!

Brando and I are back from our pseudo-honeymoon. (I say "pseudo" cause, let's face it, we didn't plan for it to be all that romantic. but it was fun as hell.) I didn't get as many scheduled blog posts finished before we left as I'd have liked... but what are ya gonna do. of course everything was left for the last minute. it's how we roll.

first we were off to Barcelona, where the plan was to spend most of the 3.5 days there on the beach. of course we ended up doing way more than that, but the beach was definitely a highlight.

and not just because there were so many boobies about...
(seriously I feel like I was one of 10% of women on the beach with a top on. my question is at what geographical point does this become ok? can people in Barcelona walk around the streets topless because they're on their way to the beach? WHERE'S THE LINE PEOPLE? )

I have so many unintentional photos of breasts.

it's funny that it's now September and I'm posting my first "summery" outfit.

if I complained about the lack of sunshine in Aberdeen before we went away, I sure didn't on vacation. it was HOT. unbelievably hot. we read in the guide books before the trip that most people don't travel to Barcelona or Morocco in August because there's absolutely stifling heat.

but I soaked up as much sun as I could and enjoyed it while it lasted. cause there's no more summer in Scotland.

I'm trying to control myself and not bombard you with millions of pictures. I have so many amazing ones. I'll definitely be posting a lot about the trip in the next few days.

in the meantime, I have a good ol' post-vacation cold (never fails), so I'm going to have some grape halls and go to bed. back to the daily grind for us love birds.

peace. ♥
