the girl on tv

before I bombard you with photos from my Ireland trip, I'll continue with this little Mad Men series of mine.

next on the list is spunky Peggy Olson. Peggy often gets overshadowed in the style department by Joan and Betty, but besides being a fantastic character, she is, as Don once said, "cute as a button."

Peggy shares Joan's professional style with less sass. she's more reserved in her fashion choices and doesn't seem as concerned with appearances as most of the women on the show, but nonetheless has a style all her own.

Peggy is the character that has the most variety in her outfits. she goes from fitted silhouettes and plaid to bright colours and full skirts. her style is simple, but feminine, almost girly. think ascot blouses, pleats, and buttons.

I think you can attribute Peggy's mish-mash style to the conflict between her feminine self and her career ambitions. not uncommon for a gal of her era, I'm sure. whether in the office or out with friends she has a look that is accessible and adorable.

Elizabeth Moss isn't exactly known as a fashion icon, but you'll find she always looks as fabulous as her Mad Men costars. in fact, her style choices echo Christina Hendricks'; flattering fits, classic looks, and effortless poise. but she's no copy cat fashionista. Elizabeth favours flowy dresses and fabrics and a slightly more contemporary look off-camera.

I personally think Peggy/Elizabeth is an attractive lady. she's not the standard, generic hottie, but she has incredibly striking features and makes great fashion choices. she is consistent and unique, and I think that makes her an inspiration for those of us who feel like we get outshone by the Joans and Bettys of the world.

see? adorable.

here are some Peggy-approved pieces you can make your own.

obviously Modcloth is a great source for any vintage style.

a cute, girly dress from Etsy for summertime Peggys!

you can find a lot of pussy-bow blouses at New Look right now. this one is a particularly pretty shade.

Asos has some gorgeous midi skirts, like this fun little number. pair them with the pussy-bow blouses and you'll be the office cutie.

and that's it for Peggy! next up is Betty, the classic 60s housewife. stay tuned!

playing: rangers- a fine frenzy

who's that lady...

I just recently finished watching all four seasons of Mad Men. yes, I know what you're thinking- what took me so long? well, sufficient to say I am now obsessed. I have a love/hate relationship with Don Draper and, based on knowledge acquired from other tv shows,  believe him to be a sociopath.

but that's not what I want to talk about.

I want to talk about the ladies! the ridiculously beautiful, endlessly stylish array of ladies. I had no idea that the 60s were my favourite fashion decade till now. pencil skirts, gorgeous florals, petticoats, pumps and super-flattering silhouettes; what's not to love!

I've decided to do a little Mad Men feature for the next couple of days. just a little post on each girl's style, and later I'll post my own recreations of their looks.

first up is my new personal style inspiration- Joan Holloway.

Joan is the office hottie. not hard to understand, right? she's got a killer bod and a keen fashion sense. and I'm not about to write a character sketch, but I love how feisty and in charge she really is. which is awesome for a woman in the 60s.

her style is classic office vixen; pencil skirts, modest necklines (to balance her va-va-voom at work, I assume), bright colours, and cuts that flatter her figure.

I want this chick's wardrobe. I'm even tempted to go out and find a little gold pen to wear around my neck.
I have no idea how she gets that amazing hair, though. I mean other than the hair stylists on the show.

and in real life, Christina Hendricks is just as classy and stunning. she always manages to find flattering, feminine, and sexy dresses that show off her great personal style. obviously she's one of hollywood's more buxom ladies, but she always carries herself tastefully and with grace.

one of my favourite things about Joan/Christina is what she's done for tv body image. she made the standard skinny girl look like old news! she's a full-figured gal, and everyone can see that she's stunning.

I'm sure most girls struggle with weight/body issues at some point in life, and recently I've been really conscious of mine. but I read somewhere that Christina Hendricks is a US size 14, and that made me feel fantastic. not like, "ooh, I'm smaller than her," but that she's a total hottie with a atypical celebrity body type. how could anyone look at her and ever think being a size 2 would be prettier?

she's gorgeous, stylish, and inspirational.

here are some ways to dress like her!

Modcloth of course has some great Joan-esque dresses, including this red one from Pinup Couture. you can find other gorgeous & playful retro dresses at their website, pinupgirlclothing.com

I recently discovered shebycindy.com, where you can find these exact Joan Holloway outfits! a bit pricey, but totally worth it.

last but not least, Bettie Page makes beautiful vintage-inspired dresses. you can find them at bettiepageclothing.com, and Modcloth also carries the brand.

and of course don't forget etsy! I've got my eye on a few Joan dresses. hopefully they won't get snatched up before I get my first paycheck...

all this Joan talk makes me want to work at an office instead.

playing: diamonds on the insidee- Ben Harper

a penny for your thoughts, a dollar for your insides

it's been a busy day! I don't have much time to post, but I didn't want to leave you with nothing for today...

so I'm sharing a few of my favourite looks right now from lookbook.nu .
I'm a recent lookbooker, but I've taken a lot of inspiration from it already.

I love that this is something I would pick out as everyday-wear, but better. I like the little touches that show how I can add that little something special to an outfit- the contrasting collar, the belt over the sweater. I am also a fan of the magazine-papered walls!

what can I say, I love floppy hats! and how the patterns and colours work together in this outfit. it's sassy and vibrant, but not crazy. if the shorts weren't so itty-bitty I would definitely wear this whole look.

this lovely lady has quickly become one of my new favourite sources of inspiration! I love everything she wears. everything. this outfit is basically why; pretty, girly prints, pastels, and cute socks. she just always looks so fresh and feminine and lovely.

this girl has some of the most epic hair I've ever seen. and a cool style to match. kind of 60s mod meets Elizabethan jester. decadent. I love the sheer and the vertical stripes in this look.

amazing florals! definitely won't be a surprise that I love this look, since I've been raving about pastels, mint green, and fairy princesses lately. this girl belongs in a poem.

definitely one of my favourite fashion bloggers! Valentine is what I envision the quintessential Parisienne to be- dainty and effortlessly chic. this outfit shows a great way to play down a slightly fancy dress for daytime. keep it simple with neutrals, boots, and casual accessories. she's always a perfect picture!

remember to check all these girls out on lookbook if you haven't already!

the one sort-of issue I do have with sites like these are the types of pictures that always get "top rated" or "hot" or "most hype," what-have-you. yes, they are always beautiful pictures with beautiful people.  but is that all that style is about?

I have not seen one girl who could be more than a size 4 on the lookbook "hot" page. I have also seen many nice, but not spectacular, outfits get high ratings because of a cool photo location or editing. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with any of this, but it kind of makes me wonder what exactly is being appreciated.

I know that fashion is intrinsically linked to art, and subsequently photography. and I love seeing beautiful photos of model-esque ingenues on any style-sharing site. but I thought these sites were for inspiring people to feel good about themselves and celebrate their love of fashion. sometimes it seems like they could make someone feel pretty bad.

it probably sounds like I'm just bitter or jealous or whatever. but I'm not. maybe a little envious, but we'd all like to be praised and flattered and appreciated sometimes and I'm not trying to hide that. I just don't think any online community should give the impression that you'll only reach the top if you have impossibly slender legs and walk around in 6-inch heels all the time. it's not realistic, and kind of sets an impossible standard.

obviously as I'm a member of lookbook, chictopia, and weardrobe this doesn't bother me enough to stop going there and participating. but it does make me wonder if this community of online fashion, which as far as I can tell started off to encourage every-day fashionistas, is heading in the direction of other mass media; portraying a certain "image" and not a sense of personal style.

just a thought. :)
and it doesn't make these looks any less lovely.
