Healthy Hair Challenge 2011 - 2012 : 31 Days On

source

Blessings and love beauties!!

It's been since 31 days since I started my Healthy Hair Challenge. Here's a little resumé of what's been going on :

● I've washed my hair once a week since I've started the challeng. I went on a search and destroy spree and I have done an overnight rhassoul clay treatment along with a bentonite clay treatment another time and clarified with neutral henna once

● I've been styling my hair in "lazy", low manipulative styles such as updos and I've also been  wearing scarves to keep my hands from my hair

● I've been moisturizing my hair with just water [and sometimes with] my leave in conditioner and sealing at least once every two days

● I've been flat twisting my hair in two parts and tucking in the ends and I always wear a satin bonnet to sleep

● I've been washing my hair in parts

● I've been using heavy butters and using more oils to deep condition as Fall has begun

Here are my observations after the first 31 days :

●  A lot less shedding

● Practically no breakage

● Breakage and tangles when I do not let my hair dry in small sections after washing

● Hair is more moisturized

I am happy with the results I have after these 21 days and have learnt some valuable lessons. The changes I am experiencing might not be evident yet but I am sure they will be in time.

For those of you that have been in this challenge with me, how has it been going? What are your observations?

How To Keep Your Hair Moisturized During The Colder Months - Part 1

source

With the arrival of the Fall comes new precautions regarding our hair care. With the harsh cold, the dry winds and little humidity, our biggest task is keeping our hair moisturized. With the cold, the hair dries out faster and dry hair only means one thing : breakage. To avoid this, constant care is needed when manipulating the hair as well as when maintaining it.
Fall and winter can be a breeze and a pleasant experience if we take care of our hair properly.

Check out these tips to know how to keep your hair as moisturized as possible :

Deep conditioner often : To brace  our hair for the cold weather, many natural divas refrain from washing their hair, that is deep conditioning and the rest, often. But deep conditioning regularly during the winter months is one of the easiest way with which to keep our hair moisturized. It also nurtures the strands and keeps them strong enough to withstand the harsh conditions. It is true that washing the hair often can dry the hair out but this is only true if you are not treating your hair with the necessary treatments

Pre-poo every time you wash your hair : It is essential to pre-poo each time you wash your hair, especially if you are going to shampoo your hair. A good pree-poo treatment adds a plus when it comes to moisture retention. [Check out this post for more on pre-pooing]

Protein treatments : Try including protein treatments in your routine to keep your hair strong and thus able to retain moisture. You do not have to do hard core protein treatments but little ones like a simple coconut milk and honey kind of treatment. Be sure to check your protein level before doing protein treatments especially if you are protein sensitive to avoid breakage. [Check out this post to know how to check your protein level]

Use a leave - in conditioner : Use a good leave in conditioner you have already tried before and have approved. This adds an extra coat of moisture and helps retain the one already gained.

Moisturize with a spray : Many call this their "daily spritz". Whatever you call yours, or whatever it it's base is, whether aloe vera juice, water or rose water, you need it more than ever during the winter months. Moisturize as needed but try to use a light spray, not something that will ruin your hair style or make your hair sticky or dirty quickly.

Moisturize with a water - based cream : This comes after the spray moisturizer and not only does this reinforce the results you get from just using the spritz it also helps moisturize, strengthen and protect from moisture - loss

Seal with butters and oils : Seal your hair before styling and when you moisturize with a butter (preferably a mix that contains oils too). This also helps keep the moisture in and avoid any damage from the external conditions. The thicker your hair is, the thicker your butter should be. Avoid putting in too much but rather, seal according to the amount of moisture you put in your hair to avoid dry, oily hair.

Avoid excess manipulation : during the cold months, excess manipulation can lead to moisture loss and thus breakage. Try wearing styles that keep your hands away from your hair or styles that need little manipulation.

Use beneficial products : there are a number of essential oils, carrier oils, herbs, actives, hydrosols, powders and clays that, when included in your hair regimen, promote [Watch out for the list]

Questions We Ask : Where Is The Line Between Protective and Non-Protective Styles?

source

I've been thinking about this question for weeks now. When I first started my natural hair journey, everything that was not twists, braids, flat twists, weaves and wigs was not a protective style now two years down the lane, I disagree.
One thing a newly natural always has to fight with are misconceptions. There are always misconceptions but it's up to you to verify whatever is being said according to the knowledge you have gained then you can check what is being said yourself.
I believe one misconception a newly natural or even any natural can have is this : only twists, braids, flat twists, weaves and wigs are protective styles, the others will definitely break my hair and I will not gain any length.

Now, looking back to my experiences, I stand to differ.I have worn these traditional  "protective styles" and also worn the non traditional ones and I have had protective effects and destructive effects with both categories. Generally, a protective style is supposed to minimize damage to near zero, help retain moisture to the maximum and thus help retain the most length as possible.

But let me say that you do not need to wear twists 100% of the time to have any one of this. You can wear updos, pin ups and buns and get the same effects with traditional protective styles and on the other hand, you can also damage your hair while wearing these protective styles. I've lived through both experience : I got dry hair and knots from wearing updos and also got knots from wearing small twists on the other hand, I have also been able to keep my hair healthy with both types of protective styles.
At the end of the day, all I can say is that, it's not really the style alone that is protective, but also how you manipulate your hair and maintain it. It's also true that the traditional protective styles are easier to manage and it's easier to avoid damage with them.

Quite frankly, I think the line between protective and non-protective styles is not definite or the law. It is up to you to try each style and see how protective they are on your hair and practice how to take care of your hair as much as possible while wearing which ever style you choose.

What are your staple protective styles?

Hair Update : Length Check September 2011

Blessings and love beauties!!

It's that time of the year again where it's time to discover my progress regarding length retention.

I am presently thinking about making a length check t-shirt so that it will be much easier for me to note down my progress. Here is a very useful post on Natural Hair Community on how to make one.

Here are the pictures taken :

Here is a comparison picture from my last length check two months ago :

I am currently at APL (armpit length) and so far, I am retaining a good amount of length.

Check out my goals concerning my length retention in this post.

By the grace of God, I continue to retain so much length and attain my goals!!

Do you do length checks?
How would you describe your overall length retention pattern been?

Hair Update : Time Flies

Blessings and love beauties and gents!!

Since I've been on a sort of hiatus for these past few days, I thought it right to update you all concerning my hair.

Since I started my Healthy Hair Challenge 2011-2012, I've been wearing lazy styles such as buns, updos, roll & tuck styles, twists, twist outs (only far one day at a time). I have really been employing as little time as possible on my hair. I normally start my week with a twist out then wear updos and buns for the rest of the week before wash day and then the cycle repeats itself.
Generally, I am loving what my hair is doing and I believe this is all down to my new hair regimen. I really give glory to God that, though it has taken 2 years, I now have a hair regimen that works 100% - no strings attached. Breakage has been minimum and my protein - moisture balance has been stable.

The name of this post is Time Flies because I cannot believe just how fast time has gone by. Wasn't it yesterday that we started Summer? Wasn't it yesterday that September began? Now October is just around the corner and the year is nearly over. I give all the glory to God and Him alone! Today, I thought back to how I used to be, how things used to be and I just could not believe God has been so good and has so much for me. I pray we finish this year safely and with all our expectations met. For those that might be looking up to God for one thing or the other, I truly encourage you to keep on waiting on God and wait for His time because He will surely surprise you and do the best for you at the right time!

That's what's been going on and this is how I am looking right now

[By the way, this lovely double hair comb with stretchy beads has made it's way to my top accessories list]

2 Years Since My Last Perm!!

Blessings and love beauties!!

I pray all is well with you and yours and you are having a wonderful week.

Sometime this week (or even probably last week), two years ago, I got my last perm. Yes, I am celebrating two years since my last perm. And guess what, ever since that day, I have never looked back. It was my second time actively making the decision to stop getting perms so at the time, I was not really sure how long the resolution would last, all I knew was that I wanted to wear my natural hair.

Looking back now, I remember mama telling me on the next month that I needed to get a relaxer because of new growth. I swallowed spit as the words, "I am staying natural" burned in my heart. At first I didn't say anything then I told her about what I was determined to do. I am sure she didn't take me seriously and was probably thinking, "here we go again with this - let's see how long this one will last".

But it did last, oh yes it did. Mama told me to get perms but she stopped when I kept singing the same song over and over again, "I am staying natural". Since I didn't want my hair to be the continual point of interest and since I didn't know what else to do with it, I decided to wear micro braids and weaves. I guess I was also buying myself time, time to think about what I was getting myself into and time to educate myself.

Before long, six months of "transitioning" had past. I decided it was time to cut out my already breaking relaxed ends. I asked mama to do it for me and she was skeptical about the idea, in fact, she was skeptical about me staying natural. I pressed on but I had a weave on at the time and it was barely three weeks old but I was yearning for the big chop - the result of watching so many natural hair YouTube videos. Mama and papa were going on a trip very soon but I really wanted mama to help me cut my hair but they ended up going on the trip but I'd told mama I was going to cut my hair myself.

The day after they left, I got me some regular scissors and chopped away.
It was not in anyway logic that I felt as liberated, free and at peace as I felt after letting go of my relaxed strands. I immediately fell in love with my TWA and started running around and looking for what products to use....now what's another story for another day.

And here I am today...two years on without a perm and I'm still gong strong in my natural hair journey.
I won't front, I give all the glory to God and Him alone. He has truly been my support and strength. At the beginning of my natural hair journey, when things were rough and harsh, I prayed to Him to give me knowledge, wisdom, understanding and strength for this journey and for the support of my loved ones. Today, I pretty much have all of that, if not more.
Thank you Lord!

Now, by His grace, there are many more years to come and many more things to learn and share!!
Let's see where I go from where and the new heights He takes me to!

I also want to take the time to thank you all!! This blog kicked off a year after I decided to stay natural, that is, a year from now. I started by posting random things - posts I thought could never be of any value to anyone except for me. I never thought the blog would turn out to become what it is today, never in my dreams. I am so grateful to you all that have been following me and supporting me from the very beginning, I know you all and you all know who you are! I really appreciate it! Thank you to those that have met me on my journey and have been nothing but sweet and supportive! You do not know how great you have made this journey for me and the things I have learnt from you all!
May God bless you all a hundred fold!

I would also like to encourage those that might be transitioning or newly natural. Ladies do not be discouraged. Stand strong and get yourself some knowledge about your beautiful roots. As I've always been saying, knowledge is power. Do not rely on others to carry you through this journey but gladly receive all the help and constructive criticism you get! Furthermore, if you need anything, browse through the little information that this blog holds and feel free to ask any questions you might have whatsoever.

And with all that being said, I clap my hands looking back and stand tall as I gaze upon the mountains yet to be climbed. Though I know what what I will encounter as I proceed,  I do know that can only get better.

How long has it been since you said goodbye to perms?

DatFunkyFro's 2011 Fall Tendencies

source

Last week I could still wear a t-shirt now I'm sporting cardigans. Glory be to God, the year has gone by so fast and it seems like yesterday that I celebrated the New Year with my family and friends. It's evident Fall is here and frankly, I welcome it with open arms. I think I have secretly long awaited the Fall in my heart and looked forward to it subconsciously. It was a great Summer, no doubt, and they only ever get better but it's time to experience the wonders and chills of the Fall.

Of course, with a new season, comes new tendencies, well, at least for me. This applies to different areas of my life and is valid for different specific points in my world. I am particularly excited about this Fall because to me, it's another chance, another season of change and metamorphosis.

So with no further ado, here are some of DatFunkyFro's very own Fall Tendencies you need to keep an eye out for :

NATURAL HAIR

This Fall, I feel more more prepared than I was with my natural hair last Fall. This is what I am going to be doing this fall with my natural hair :

● Moisturizing with a water based moisturizing cream along with just plain water everyday

● Sealing with OMO OGO Naturals' butters, preferably the Shea - Cocoa Hair Butter

● Styling hair in lazy updos, protective buns and simple yet elegant styles

● Following my Healthy Hair Challenge as scrupulously as I can

● As little manipulation as possible

WARDROBE

I am particularly excited about my dressing this Fall but I am not at all talking about me going shopping or anything like that because, believe me, I am surely going to be looking through my wardrobe and digging up some old wears to play with and I'm going to be mixing them all up.

● I am going to try mix matching colors - who says you can only have color in the Summer? I don't. Watch out for the colors.

● Will be putting it all together - simple as that

●Will be going to be going with a bit of funky elegance and simple retro - let's what happens

● Accessorizing - I have always loved accessories but I don't think I have ever been able to put them together until now therefore I will be taking advantage of them to warm up the Fall

FOOD | HEALTH

● Work will be tilted towards drawing up and maintaining an exercising routine

● My eating will be monitored to avoid anything that does not benefit my health directly

SKINCARE

Since from now on, it's only going to get colder, I am going to be stepping up my game in moisturizing, protecting and nurturing my skin by applying my present regimen and coming up with even better strategies

LIFESTYLE

These past nine months have been a blast but they have also thought me a lot. I now truly know that we cannot take life lightly at all and we have to be 100% grateful for all we have and even what we don't. I believe these three coming months will be amazing by the grace of God and all I am about right now is love; being grateful and living each day to the fullest, walking according to the knowledge of God and in the light if His will.

By the grace of God, I will accomplish these and much more because I can do all things through Christ that strengthens me (Philippians 4 : 13)!

What are your own Fall tendencies?

Trimming Versus Search & Destroy Method

source

I recently asked myself this question : which one is more efficient, trimming or the search and destroy method? Though I didn't come up with an answer immediately, I can now give a detailed account of the verdict. But before we arrive at a conclusion, let us compare the two.

TRIMMING METHOD

I'm sure many of you have already heard of trimming before. In fact, I think it's safe to say we all know what it consists of. Trimming is just that, cutting off a bit of the ends of the hair in a uniform manner. Some women do it monthly, or even bi-yearly depending on their needs and hair goals. Some women choose to get their hair trimmed in the salon while others prefer to do it themselves. Another thing to know is that most naturals trim their hair while it is stretched and a lot 90% of these women straighten their hair before trimming it.

SEARCH AND DESTROY METHOD

The search and destroy method is a less uniform but direct way of trimming. Instead of cutting of a certain amount, a natural would search through her strands and cut off the split ends, SSKs (single strand knots or fairy knots). The search and destroy method can be done monthly or as one pleases and it is normally done at home. Again, most ladies do it on after straightening their hair.

SO...WHICH ONE IS BEST?

I will answer this question according to my experience and what I've learnt in my natural hair journey so far. While these methods have their pros and cons they are both useful and though both methods seem similar, they actually have distinct roles in a healthy hair regimen. Some naturals choose to follow either one of the methods and some practice them both. Personally, I think it is best to employ both methods and compliment one of them with the other. To understand this, try understanding how each one of them contribute to a hair regimen. The trimming method helps prevent split ends and damaged ends that can wreak serious havoc is left alone. This method is more into prevention that elimination. You can choose to follow this method alone but it doesn't mean your ends are damage free. For example, imagine you have a number of really bad split ends that have extended to a high length in the hair shaft and then you want to trim your hair like you normally do...If you choose to trim only an inch or so and those split ends go way higher than that, do you think you've solved the problem. No, you haven't. That is why I say the trimming method is more tilted towards prevention. Now the search and destroy method helps eliminate any type of damage (that you are able to spot). This method is totally about elimination. Now let's go back to our story and imagine you also practice this method...well then, you would be able to spot the damaged strands and get rid of them then your problem would be solved!

During the early days of my natural hair journey, I used to believe trimming wasn't necessary and I was oblivious to the search and destroy method. Now I know better. I do still think trimming should not be done too often or else you could loose your length for nothing. But for those of us who still do not believe in trimming, think about this : Imagine you do not trim your hair for a whole year and then all those damaged ends get really bad and affect the higher levels of the hair shaft..and then by the time you realize it, you have to cut about 5 inches of your hair off. Don't try to hold on to length you might have to loose later on because you want to quickly gain length and wear your hair long. It doesn't make sense if your hair is going to be damaged. However, don't try cutting off your hair every so often while stressing over imaginary split ends
In conclusion, my verdict is as follows : both methods compliment each other and I believe they are both a vital part of any healthy natural hair journey. It is up to the natural diva to come up with a hair regimen and decide how to work with both methods and how often she should utilize them.

Which method do you practice?
Which one do you think is best?

Healthy Hair Challenge 2011 - 2012 : 14 Days On

source

Blessings and love beauties!!

It's been since 14 days since I started my Healthy Hair Challenge. Here's a little recap of what's been going on

● I've washed my hair once since I've started the challeng. I went on a search and destroy spree and I did an overnight rhassoul clay treatment

● I've been styling my hair in "lazy" styles such as updos and I've also been  wearing scarves to keep my hands from my hair

● I've been moisturizing my hair with just water and my leave in conditioner mostly once every two days

● I've been flat twisting my hair in two parts and tucking in the ends and I always wear a satin bonnet to sleep

Here are my observations after the first 14 days :

● Less shedding

● Practically no breakage

I am happy so far with the results I have after these first 14 days. So far, in general, I am happy with the way the Healthy Hair Challenge has been going and I am really expectant about the results to come.

For those of you that have been in this challenge with me, how has it been going? What are your observations?

And Thus Concludes The Hiatus...

Blessings and love beauties!!

I pray you are all well and doing great...I have truly missed you all! But no worries, the hiatus has ended I am back...along with so many goodies!

Firstly, today is the tenth day of my Healthy Hair Challenge and I have to admit, I have not really been doing much to my hair until yesterday. I am still so excited to be on this challenge and I cannot wait to see all that I will be learning and the results I will be getting.
I put in some flat twists/two strand twists ten days ago but took them down a few days later. After that, I was wearing lazy updo styles every morning.
Yesterday/today was wash day so I'm back to giving my hair all the TLC it needs.

Secondly, I have been getting into some crafting and sewing so I will be sharing about that very soon. I recently forced taught myself to sow about two months ago and finally got the hang of my dad's old sewing machine that has just been sitting at home. I initially wanted to buy a new one because I thought my dad's machine was too old and what's more, it's lost it's manual...but boy, these things are actually more expensive than I'd imagines. I am so glad I finally got the hang of it though at first it was a love/hate relationship now I love it...I can't wait to see my dad's reaction when he get's back from his trip because he was supposed to teach me.
I have been playing around with it a lot and I've been learning a lot of things at the same time. I am so thankful to God for giving me the grace to do this and accomplish one of my longest goals...

That's it for now.
Posting is officially back to normal and I cannot wait to hear from you all!
Thank you all so much for your love and prayers! I truly appreciate it. May God bless you a hundred fold!

How have your summer been going?
If you are also doing the Healthy Hair Challenge, let me know how it has been going.

Healthy Hair Challenge 2011 - 2012 UPDATE

source

Blessings and love beauties!!

I pray all is well with you all and you have started your week well.

Some of you might have noticed that I stopped posting for a few days, which is not really me since I try to post at least once a day. I have actually been quite busy, been having a tiring week, both physically and psychologically. I have started the exams I'd mentioned and my heart has just been heavy. But I trust God. He has really been the pillar in my life and has upheld me through. Whatever happens, I know my future is sealed in His hands. THough things might look foggy, I have decided to look to my future through the eyes of faith and abandon the eyes of the flesh. I truly appreciate all your love! Thank you and God bless you!

My primary reason for posting today is to update my Healthy Hair Challenge Guidelines. Yes, I know it starts tomorrow, but I have been having a lot of though over the guidelines I'd set in the original post.
I have reconsidered many things and have decided to adjust the rules. Here are the updated criterion for the challenge :

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

 Cleansing :

● Shampoo hair every 3 weeks every week with sulfate - free shampoo : to keep the scalp clean

-- I will be using my liquid black soap shampoo

● Do an ACV rinse every 3 weeks every week : to avoid hard water/product build up // cleanse the scalp thoroughly

● Clarify every 9 weeks once a monthto cleanse thoroughly // to strengthen the hair strands

-- I will be alternating between shikakai powder and neutral henna

Treatments :

● Pre - poo every 3 weeks every week : for extra moisture // for a bit of protein

-- I will be using my conditioner and olive oil mix

● Deep condition every 3 weeks  every weekfor moisture // for vital nutrients

-- I will be using my rhassoul clay mix once every 6 weeks twice a month

-- I will also be using bentonite clay once every 9 weeks once a month

● Conditioning every 3 weeks every week : for moisture // detangling

-- I will be detangling with both my fingers and paddle brush

● Tea rinse every 3 weeks  every weekto avoid with excess shedding

Styling :

● Style by using : leave - in conditioner // hair butters // daily spritz

Wear protective styles at least 5 times a week : buns // two strand twists // flat twists // updos Wear  low manipulation styles with maximum care

Wear scarves/beanie/bonnets/beret at least once a week : to cut down on manipulation Wear scarves, beanies, berets, bonnets on days where there is no style inspiration. DO NOT attempt to manipulate hair without having an idea what to do

Only wear "out" styles maximum once a week : twist outs // braid outs // pin up updos

Miscellanious

● Avoid styles that pull the hair like puffs : to keep edges from breaking // to avoid weakening the hair through tension

● Moisturize hair at least once every two days, especially the ends

● Search and destroy single strand knots/spit ends once every 3 months

-- I will only be using my shears specialized for my hair alone to avoid damaging the hair while cutting off the damaged strands

● Absolutely no heat styling

● Always wash in sections

● Keep hair as stretched as possible : to avoid knotting

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have decided to keep washing my hair every week like U have been doing all Summer because I have realized and recalled that it's not in the washing that causes harm to your hair, but how you wash. In fact, washing the hair and scalp is a very vital part of healthy hair growth and maintenance. Therefore, if I want to grow and keep healthy hair, I should in no way shy away from washing my hair.  My initial reason for deciding to wash every 3 weeks is because of the time it takes me to wash my hair...but I was being lazy in my mind because my wash days have been so much better than they used to be and actually go by faster that before.
I have realized that taking care of the scalp is very important. Not washing means, all the sweat, dirt you accumulate will just sit there and clog your scalp and hinder proper growth. I have realized that, it's not in the number of times you wash your hair but it's really the method applied and methods used. It is even advised to wash the hair more than once (at least shampoo and condition) a week.

I have also decided to not put in the "wear protective styles at least 5 times a week" rule. To tell you the truth, I am not sure how much I can keep up with this rule since I have fallen so in love with my hair being out and always end up missing it after a few days of protective styles. Of course, I will still be opting mostly for styles that protect my ends and all ...
I know what you are all thinking, protective styles grow hair...um no they don't, not really.
Again, it's not the protective styles but how you do them. YOu can protective style and still not retain length depending on how you care for your hair. And you can not protective style and grow healthy hair! Yes, it is possible. I grow weary of the way I used to think and many of us still think sometimes. Protective styles are good, don't get me wrong, I love them but to say they are the key to healthy hair is not exactly true. Check out this post and you'll see what I'm taking about.
Therefore, I will be experimenting with different styles, but how I care and manipulate my hair is truly the key.
I will be focusing on low manipulation styles and try and be much more gentle when styling.

Another addition is, as the challenge goes on, I will be giving myself little goals, weekly/monthly etc.

Those are the updates for now. I am really excited about starting this challenge!
Thank you to all those that have joined! I can't wait to see how it goes for you!
Remember, you can always join us anytime!

Hair Update : Best Twist - Outs Ever?

Blessings and love beauties!!

This is another quick hair update to let you know what's been going on with my hair...

After my last wash day, I put in some twists and took them off the day after...
I was really pleased with the results and in fact, I concluded that this has got to be one of the best, if not the best twist - outs I've ever worn!!
I really like the definition and love how moisturized, smooth my hair was and I was really happy at how it wasn't oily or sticky at all!!
I also enjoyed how my hair was so pliable and has so much body and bounce.

I pinned back the right side and created a sort of side parting...

As a natural queen, if you are still battling with some styles and still trying to find the right products and method for them to suit your hair needs and personal preferences, all I can say if just keep on trying! You see, the thing about a natural hair journey is that, you really have to try lots of things before you get to a stage where you have mastered your hair - you know what it likes, you know how to accomplish the styles you want and which products to use at what time
So if you are still trying to get the perfect this or that...keep on trying, you will eventually get there.
As for me, I am still trying to master the styles I like to wear according to my own hair.
This twist - out is definitely a confirmation that I am not so far away anymore!

It was definitely a good twist - out day!!

Would you say you have mastered you hair yet?
What are your staple styles?

Questions We Ask : Why Isn't My Hair Growing?

source

A number of us naturals find ourselves asking this question or have asked this question at least once in our natural hair journey so far.

Firstly, we have to be aware that natural hair shrinks a lot therefore, sometimes, we have the impression that it's not growing but actually it is. To make sure your hair is growing/not growing, try tracking your hair growth (every month or every two months) by doing length checks. To do a length check, pick a few strands from a particular spot on your head and stretch them out then take a picture. The next time you do a length check, pick those same strands from that particular spot and take another picture. When you compare the pictures, you'll know whether your hair is growing or not.

Secondly, it is good to know that averagely, hair grows about half an inch a month. This is true for me, personally. If you see that your hair is growing that much or more in a month, then you hair is pretty much growing but if you are struggling to grow 2 inched of hair in six months, then that's not normal.

Now let's get down to the two main reasons why you might be lacking length :

1. the scalp : hair grows from the scalp yet, most of us fail to take care of our scalp rather we prefer to nurse our ends . Both is good but if your scalp is not being taken care of then you are impeding your hair growth. For hair to grow like it should, the scalp needs to be clean (no clogged pores) and produce the normal amount of sebum. Most of the time, the problem is in cleaning our scalp. When the scalp is dirty and clogged with all kind of things, it is hard for hair to grow properly.
Washing the scalp regularly helps to avoid this. You can shampoo, use cleansing clays such as bentonite clay or if you do not like to shampoo regularly, you can try alternatives like apple cider vinegar.
To avoid getting your scalp so dirty easily, it is good to avoid product build up, that is, avoid piling too much product on your scalp/hair. Also, avoid products that naturally clog the pores, like mineral oil and petrolatum.
Another healthy practice are things like scalp scrubs. This helps cleanse the scalp thoroughly. It is also useful to nurture and feed your scalp with healthy nutrients such as oils that are easily absorbed into the scalp (for example jojoba oil), diluted essential oils that help with sebum production (for example ylang ylang EO) and that favor blood circulation to the scalp (for example peppermint EO) thus favoring growth. To favor blood circulation to the scalp it is also useful to try a scalp massage.
If you are finding it challenging for your hair to grow, the scalp is a very good place to start.
[please note : seek advice from a profession before using any kind of essential oils epecially if you are pregnant or nursing]

2. the ends : your ends are the oldest part of your hair therefore, they are more prone to damage. Many naturals experience normal growth from the scalp but since there ends are damaged or very weak, they break off and it ends up looking like their hair is not growing. The only thing I can say is, if you have damaged ends, cut them off! Don't try holding on to your slit ends, fairy knots and so on because they will only make cause more damage!! (and I should know).
Now, if your ends are not particularly damaged in anyway, it is still very wise to nurture them and nurse them. Try protective styles that protect your ends like buns and updos. Don't wear your hair down, if it's long enough to reach your shoulders because the friction against whatever fabric you might be wearing will weaken them (unless you are wearing satin or wear a satin scarf around your shoulder).
Try moisturizing your ends regularly and sealing them with oils and butters because since they are farthest from your scalp, they get less nutrients.
Don't treat your ends anyhow because if there is no point in your hair growing only to break off at the ends.
If you are experiencing difficulties with growing your hair out, try taking care of your ends to retain all your growth.

3. your body : if you are trying to grow your hair properly, try eating properly and drinking lots of water. Your skin, nails and hair are all a mirror of what's going on inside of your body so if your hair is not growing properly, though you take care of your scalp, it is most likely what you are eating/drinking. Refrain from junk food and processed sugar, but rather eat lots of vegetables and fruits because they contain lots of vital minerals that you need to grow your hair (and retain length). Water is also very key when trying to grow out your hair...it is the ultimate moisturizer for our hair!

All that being said, please note that, genetics, your age, your present situations and so on play an important role in how your hair grows. Some naturals have hair that naturally grows really fast, while others, because of their genes, grow their hair at a slower pace. Stress and pregnancy can also slow down hair growth.

The best thing you can do is just to take care of your scalp, your hair, watch your intake and be patient!

Happy growing!
