Rubbernecker Release & Blog Stroll

We have another exciting release and Blog Stroll for you today. Rubbernecker has just released a gorgeous silhouette floral set with sentiments, a Teddy Bear Inchie set and a cheesecloth background. You will want to start at the Rubbernecker Blog if you happened to come here first. Stroll through the Design Team’s blogs, check out the awesome sampling of cards they have for you today and of course pick up the key word phrases at each stop for a chance to win the set of your choice! My key phrase today is Cheesecloth Be sure to visit Sherry next for more eye candy and the next clue.

My card today features Flower Silhouettes 468. The flower stamp and foliage were colored with Copic markers and misted with Rubbing Alcohol before putting the rubber to paper. I combined colors so they would blend slightly when misted.

The Fern Background is also available from Rubbernecker and one of my favorites. I took a photo of the finished background before the layering so you can see the results. It was created by inking up the background with Adirondack Pigment in Juniper and then sponged with Adirondack Pigment/Terra Cotta. I misted the inked rubber to let the colors meld together before stamping. You won’t want to get it too wet, I use Ranger’s Mini Misters. They are perfect for water, rubbing alcohol, reinkers, perfect pearls……..

When did you first decide to become an illustrator? Was there a pivotal moment?

I´ve grown up among oils and brushes. Since I was a child, drawing and painting were my most important languages. Eventually I realized that my drawings could get life and movement and I fell in love with animation and the Disney universe. I dreamed of spending my life among these fantastic characters. But I think the pivotal moment in which I realized that these wishes could become real was when I was chosen among a lot of graphic designers to work for a leading TV Channel's art department. There I came to understand that I could make a living with my craft.

Who or what inspires you?

There are a lot of things that inspire me, but mostly I find inspiration in the process of drawing. There I find a way to understand the world, a way of knowledge. Drawing and painting from life reveals to me the beauty which is hidden out there. I also pay attention to what other artists are doing and I try to understand their way of seeing the world.

Where does your training come from? Self-taught? College/Art School?

I graduated from The Avellaneda Cinematographic Institute and I have a degree in Graphic Design from Buenos Aires University, Argentina. But I actually learned the method to understanding form and color from my professor Carlos Marchi. I studied with him for six wonderful years!

How do you keep "fresh" within your industry?

I try to find ways to improve myself in each work. Each illustration implies a challenge for me. Sometimes I research a specific type of light. And sometimes I experiment with composition and perspective. In addition I visit as many art exhibitions as I can.

What are some of your current projects?

Presently I’m working in a Star Wars RPG book and I have a project of my own: I’m working on a full color graphic novel. I’m in the very beginning stages of the project, designing characters and environments. I’m also planning a series of big oil epic paintings.

Which of your projects are you the most proud of? And why?

Definitely, the Star Wars covers I made in 2008. They were a huge challenge for me. I’m really happy with the results I reached on these covers!

Are there any areas, techniques, mediums, projects in your field that you have yet to try?

Oh yes! Fortunately there are always techniques and mediums to explore. I’m interested in getting deeper into watercolor technique, I love this medium and I want to improve my skills in dealing with it.

Any advice to the novice designer/ illustrator?

I think is important to keep in mind what Picasso said: this craft is 90% work and 10 % talent. Illustrators have to train themselves every day in several topics and use this knowledge to improve their expression skills.

What makes a designed piece or illustration successful?

Well is really hard to understand this matter. It’s a very interesting question. I think it’s a mix of a good technique and understanding of the medium we are using and a fresh soul reflected in that piece. Something like an old man and a baby living into the same person.

What do you do to keep yourself motivated and avoid burn-out?

I always try to set myself a specific goal to achieve and I keep my mind focused on that particular topic. I enjoy the challenge of getting into the language of painting the several materials that I have to work on: metal, leather, cloth, skin, hair.

Finish this sentence. "If I weren't a designer/illustrator I would have been a..."

...I would work into the film industry, in the field of special effects.

And finally, what is the best thing on prime-time TV right now?

I’m so sorry but I don’t watch TV.

This card is pretty self explanatory. I cut the bright blue frame using my 12” Fiskars paper cutter. The grass was just created by cutting a strip of cardstock to fit under the frame and is about 3/4” wide. I used my Tim Holtz scissors to finely cut the blades of grass and then ruffled the edges. The soccer Dad looks like he is having a ball, so that is the sentiment I went with. Oh, the net and ball behind him is from the Soccer Kids set.

Stamps: Soccer Sentiments, Soccer Co-Ed

Paper: Prism Classic Yellow/Green, Frosted Teal, Nautical Blue Med., Suede Brown Dk., classic Red

Ink: Versafine Onyx Black, Copic Markers

Kind, Caring, Dad…………

P6080001

It’s Wednesday and that means it’s another Wacky Wednesday challenge day.  This week, Joan is challenging us to make a Fathers Day card.  I chose to add a shipping tag to my card using 7gypsies 6x6 gypsy market papers on the top portion with flourishes stamped on the bottom portion.  The man is stamped on acetate and layered over the top.  Actually, the stamp is by KK Originals and is titled Isabelle.  So, I am guessing it is supposed to be a female but I thought it looked like a guy.  The Kind and Caring definitions are cardstock stickers by Pebbles Inc.  I added a spiral clip and a hinge clip by Tim Holtz.  The alpha brads are from an unknown source.  The flourishes stamped on the card base were stamped with Distress Black Soot ink and misted with water to soften them into the cardstock and the wet edges were sponged in black as well.  The tag is raised on foam dimensional tape.

Stamps:  Flourish Set 463, Isabelle 6607-M KK originals

Paper:  Prism Blush Red Dk, Black.  Medium shipping Tag, 7gypsies 6x6 gypsy market

Ink:  Stazon Jet Black, Distress Black Soot & Fired Brick

Accessories:  Tim Holtz hinge clip, spiral clip, alpha brads, CS definition stickers, Acetate, Hemp, Fibers.  Foam dimensional tape.

All of the challenge details are on the Rubbernecker Stamp Company BLOG  We hope you will join the Design Team in the challenge and play along!

Christine and Jason 5.23.09

I had the opportunity to spend Memorial Day weekend with an amazing family. We worked on Christine and Jason's wedding for 16 months and the results were fabulous. I can't say enough nice things about the families that this couple comes from. The ceremony and reception were held at The Hilton President Hotel on May 23rd. Karyn  from Sidelines provided the floral and the most incredible Chuppah I have ever laid eyes on. She is truly fantastic. The President staff was professional, quick and incredibly gracious as they accommodated a weekend of activities from hospitality suites on Friday to the Sunday brunch that was hosted by the groom's family. The guests were treated with so many wonderful treats from a tour of Kansas City to welcome bags stuffed full of goodies, midnight snacks and cupcakes on Sunday. I have to say that the most wonderful treat of all was watching Christine and Jason together. They are such a wonderful couple and the love that they have for each other and their families was contagious. I truly feel honored to have been a part of this celebration. Adrienne Maples again captured the day like only she can and the Michael Beers Band had guests dancing again before it was even time to dance. The wedding cake was provided by Lynne Mueller and the wedding gown was from Bridal Extraordinaire. The end of Memorial Day weekend was bittersweet for me because I will truly miss working on this wedding but the magic that was created that weekend will always bring a smile to my face!

Wacky Wednesday #14 – a color challenge

P6010002  Broni is hosting the wacky wednesday challenge this week and she chose a color challenge.

Prism: Spring Willow Medium, Intense Orange, Intense Yellow (SU! Old Olive, Pumpkin Pie, Summer Sun)  the combination goes perfectly with 7gypsies Market Paper.  I used 2 different patterns from the 12 x 12 collection.

All of the details are on the Rubbernecker Stamp Company BLOG  We hope you will join the Design Team in the challenge.

Bev  - Savor the Journey

Broni - Splashes of Watercolor

Candy - Candys Land

Joan - Stamping with a Passion!

Jules -  Stampin with Inky Fingers

Kittie -  Kittie Kraft

Linda -  Linda’s Works of Heart

Sherry - Walkin' on the BAD Side!

The Faux Metal bamboo layer was created by cutting a lightweight coaster to the desired size, pressing it into an embossing ink pad and then Ultra Thick Embossing Enamel.  I used a melting pot to heat/melt the powder because the large particles don’t fly all over the place like they do using a heat gun.  3 layers of UTEE were added and then the Bamboo stamp inked with Stazon Jet Black was pressed in to the hot layers.  The stamp will stick to the UTEE.  Just leave it and let the whole thing cool for a few minutes before seperating the rubber from the embossed chipboard.  16583

Stamps:  KK Originals Solid Bamboo & Life

Life is a Journey sentiment from Scratches & Stains set

Paper:  Prism Spring Willow Medium, Intense Orange, Intense Yellow, Birchtone Dark.  7gypsies Market 12 x 12 papers

Ink:  Embossing, Stazon Jet Black16591

Accessories:  UTEE Gold, Wired Organdy, Chinese Coin Charm, Foam Dimensional Tape, Melting Pot.
